‘First Fix’ & ‘Second Fix’ – What’s The Difference?!

The division of ‘first fix’ and ‘second fix’ carpentry relates to the number of phases required to finish a project. For example, following the completion of first fix works by a qualified carpenter, your electrician will lay cables and your plumber will run all necessary piping. Your carpenter will then return to complete the finishing second fix carpentry works.

What Is ‘First Fix’?

First fix refers to all structural works completed prior to the plastering of a new build, extension or renovation. It is included within the first phase of constructing a building. The first phase starts from the frame of the build to the point of decorating.

First fix carpentry includes works such as constructing the stud wall, framing, roof struts, floor joists and door frames.

What Is ‘Second Fix’?

Second fix carpentry, otherwise known as ‘Finish Carpentry’ refers to the finishing work completed after plastering. This includes fixing architrave, skirting, flooring, and hanging all hardwood or softwood internal doors.
